z0MG teh DOUBLE-GAY

Postby Orion ZyGarian » Wed Aug 19, 2009 7:16 pm

Oh noes! So I picked up a '96 Miata for $800 today. I really didnt need another car, but I could definitely use the drivetrain and whatever other various bits on it and part the rest of it out.

It really needs new tires, but other than that, an oil change, valve cover gasket, and crappy body is all that keeps it from being a $3k or so car. A/C blows frigid, has working power windows, ABS, cruise control, some stereo stuff, and whatever else. I gave it a quick wash and cleaned the wheels up as best as I could after pics too.

Yeah, about $300 shipped new, and its not even a real roll bar...its just a "style" bar. Basically the ricer version of a real roll bar to pretend you have one and show it off, despite not actually being entirely safe or roll proof.

First thing I did was take pics. Second thing was take off the style bar to put it on the '93 :P

So basically I shortened the original story...what actually happened is I went halfsies with a good friend of mine who's using it as a DD for now. He's building a 2JZ S14 and sold both running cars he had for fundage..not the best idea, since he's been without a running car for a while now. My mom wouldnt let me keep another car in the driveway (I had 4 at once as some of you remember, the two turbo Supras, the AE86, and Miata #1), so I needed somewhere to keep the car and my friend needed a daily driver. I felt all of this was superfluous, as I intended on buying the rest of the car back from him when he was done with his 240. A bit has changed since then.

Here's what the wheels look like after about an hour of scrubbing just after the original pics were taken:

Oh and look at that...it looks like someone took the car drifting..

While I was at work no less!

I always thought the wheelbase was too short to be a good drift car, but he's been borrowing some wheels and we've been flogging it with the recent rain...and I must say he's quite a good driver! We both agree this is the best $400 car ever bought, so much that he's decided he's going to keep the car a little longer than he thought.

Once he finishes his project, I'm going to rebuild the 96's engine, take the transmission, buy a Torsen, and swap it all over to the 93. Rather than part out the 96 or put the 93's 1.6 in it and sell it, he's pretty set on putting a 13B in it. I wasnt sure how serious he was about it, but he said "as serious as I was about putting a 2JZ in a 240," so it sounds pretty set. I might convince him to do a basic turbo setup like me or V8 or something else, but a 13B would be a hell of a lot of fun too.

"Roll" bar installed from the 96 to the 93. Some minor dremel work on the plastic interior crap around the seat belt tower and it bolted in. Even hooked a vacuum pump to the A/C while I was doing it, so a $30 recharge kit/R134a conversion is in the short future.
